“…Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved…” Acts 16:30-31 NKJV
“‘What must I do?’ the trembling jailer cried, when dazed by fear and wonder; ‘Believe on Christ!’ was all that Paul replied, ‘and you shall be saved from sin.'” (lyrics by Harry D. Clarke).
My Dad, Lawson Dooms, born June 7, 1910, developed his God-given talents to “Draw people to Christ.” Just weeks before I was born again, he put together a framed message “Christ died for our sins” with a neon cross that when plugged in turned “blood red.” I watched him construct, frame and paint the design he created. God used that and a verse a blind evangelistic singer asked me to read to him: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” God’s Word convicted me to make the life-changing decision to “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Dad put together another copy of “Christ died for our sins,” framed it, and placed it outside a local church in Terre Haute, Indiana along US 41.
Years later, when I was a university student, my Dad and I formed Gospel Advertising Association, and he designed a “roadside missionary” with the message: “Believe on Christ and you will be saved.” I secured locations between Macon, Georgia and Miami, Florida along US 41, and accompanied my Dad, using a post hole digger, placing them to be seen by thousands of passersby. My Dad drew his final breath Saturday, November 3, 1973, praying from his home in Florida for what was happening at TTT.
My daughter Tami designed our current billboard with the message “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” accompanied by a photo of teenagers carrying unfurled Christian flags beside the words “Telling The TRUTH to/through teenagers” – about 15 of these billboards are consistently placed in various locations across the area, with space provided by Lamar Outdoor.
A reproduction of the billboard is on the cover of “God’s ABCs.” Thousands are distributed through Fair Share and by caring Christians throughout the year, including by listeners of Telling The TRUTH radio, heard daily in 25 states, and via podcast. A copy of the billboard is on banners in the TTT lobby and on center stage. Similar banners will be placed on each “Fair Share” tent, to be seen by thousands of fairgoers in up to 14 Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky counties between July 8 and August 16.
We are thanking God by faith for the needed roadside missionary with information signage, ultimately including a digital display, on the TTT campus, (13000 US Highway 41 North at Boonville New Harmony Road) communicating the “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” invitation.
The lyrics of “Jesus Saves” continue to motivate: “We have heard the joyful sound: Jesus saves! Jesus saves! Spread the tidings all around: Jesus saves! Jesus saves! Bear the news to every land, climb the steeps and cross the waves; onward ’tis our Lord’s command: Jesus saves! Jesus saves!”
The Paul and Silas / Philippian jailer story: “Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods. And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed. And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, ‘Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.’ Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. And he brought them out and said, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ So they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved…'” Acts 16:22-31 NKJV
